Aligned Duality

Photographs by Hannah Evans & Maegan Beck
November 27th - December 4th, 2018
Gallery 115, University of Ottawa

In Aligned Duality, Evans and Beck investigate aspects of identity that at times stay hidden even when light is shone upon them. Utilising analogue photography, both artists study the complexities of human sexuality by capturing personal details of models — allies of the community, or those who identity as queer themselves — highlighting individuality and the multitude of aesthetic divergences among familiar, and often parallel, life paths. Both artists openly identify as queer, however, have encountered individual and social resistances within the process of specifically labelling their evolving sexual orientations.

Hannah Evans is a photo based artist living in Ottawa, Canada. She is a graduate of the Photographic Arts and Production program at the School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa (2017) and is currently completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Ottawa.

Maegan Beck is a visual artist working toward the completion of her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Ottawa. Originally from Saskatchewan, Beck’s analogue film work is often influenced by prairie landscapes with resonating themes of structural decay, nostalgia, and inquiries of femininity.
